Reason #2 to Buy Local Food

#2 Local produce is better for you!

A recent study showed that fresh produce loses nutrients quickly. Food that is frozen or canned soon after harvest is actually more nutritious than some "fresh" produce that has been on the truck or supermarket shelf for a week. Locally grown food, purchased soon after harvest, retains its nutrients.

The Top 10 Reasons to Buy Local Food

1. Locally grown food tastes better!

Food grown in your own community was probably picked within the past day or two. It's crisp, sweet and loaded with flavor. Produce flown or trucked in from California, Florida, Chile or Holland is quite understandably, much older. Several studies have shown that the average distance food travels from farm to plate is 1,500 miles. In a weeklong (or more) delay from harvest to dinner table, sugars turn to starches, plants cells shrink and produce loses its vitality.

We are excited to announce that Nowata County Farmer's Market has found a new, permanent home. No more wondering and searching us out. You will now be able to find us conveniently located in the Orscheln Farm and Home parking lot every Saturday morning from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Nowata County Farmer's Market is ready for this great move, and eager to provide a great resource to the community. A special thank you goes out to Stacy Epperson, who worked with us.

Nowata County Farmer's Market kicked off our season May 12, 2012. Our farmer's are planting, weeding, watering, and pruning away to bring the community the most delicious and freshest products for your purchasing pleasure.

No room for a garden? No time to tend it? Honestly have no desire to go through all the time and trouble to obtain your fresh fruits and vegetables? Let our farmers help you and your family out!

While it is still early in the season, we have already seen a multitude of fresh eats. From peas, green beans, lettuce and kale, to beets, onions, radishes, new potatoes, even kohlrabi. Don't forget your farm fresh eggs, and homemade jellies while you're at it. Add in some fresh baked goods, and you have the perfect recipe for great healthy eating! The season has started off wonderfully, and can do nothing but get better and more plentiful with each week. Our products are locally grown, or hand made, and the freshest you will find. The only "truck" they arrive on is the good old farm truck, loaded each Saturday morning with freshly picked fruits and vegetables.

I am pleased to announce, that we will be featuring a post for each farmer who is a member of the Nowata County Farmer's Market, so be watching for our "Featured Farmer" posts that will begin very soon.
